Objective The objective of Augusta Photo Festival's 1st Biennial Down Year Photo Competition is to provide photographers of all skill levels an opportunity to showcase their photography talents and skills in a friendly and competitive environment. In doing so, the Photo Competition will also generate sufficient funds to not only support the Photo Competition, but also provide revenues for other Festival activities.
Dates The Photo Competition begins Sunday, October 20th, 2019, and closes on Thursday, October 31, 2019. All entries must be electronically uploaded to the APF website by midnight on October 31, 2019 (US Eastern). No others will be accepted.
Who May Enter The Photo Competition is open to all photographers … both adults and youth alike. Members of the APF Board of Directors, the APF Photo Competition judging committee, and sponsors are not permitted to enter the photo contest.
Groups In order to encourage maximum participation in the Competition and to ensure a fair and competitive opportunity for everyone, photographers are organized into three different groups.
- Youth Group. Photographers that are 17 years of age or younger when the photo was taken. This group is to encourage our youth to express themselves and share their views in the field of photography.
- Enthusiast Group. No age requirement. This group is for beginner through enthusiast photographers. It provides an opportunity to showcase photography talents and skills in a friendly and competitive environment and is designed to encourage the advancement of creative and technical photography skills. For this competition, enthusiast photographers are those who have not placed (Best of Show, 1st, 2nd, or 3rd places) in two or more previous APF photo competitions(2008, 2010, 2012, 2014 or 2016 - any category).
- Advanced Group. No age requirement. This group is for advanced photographers - those that possess an advanced level of creative and/or technical photography skills. However, anyone may enter photographs in this group. It is designed to showcase advanced talents and skills in a friendly and competitive environment without discouraging the beginner/enthusiast photography competitors.
Photographers (adults only) that have been winners (Best of Show, 1st, 2nd, or 3rd places) in any of the past APF photo competitions (2008, 2010, 2012, 2014, 2016 or 2018 - any category) are considered to be Advanced and may not participate in the Enthusiast Group.
All photographers (of any age) are allowed and encouraged to participate in the Advanced group if they wish to compete at this level.
Categories and Prizes There are a total of 14 different categories in the Photo Competition this year - three categories in the Youth Group, five categories in the Enthusiast Group, and six categories in the Advanced Group. You may enter photographs in all groups and categories, provided you meet the requirements of each group. However, youmay notenter the same photograph more than once in any of the different groups and categories. Contestants are responsible for entering their photographs in the proper category. Descriptions of categories are described below. Prizes are awarded for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd places in each of the competition groups and categories. In addition, a $500 “Best of Show” award will be presented to the best overall photograph from all groups and categories.Youth Group Categories
Only one contestant may enter for each registered account.
After you log into the APF website, browse to the Photo Competition section.
Before starting to upload your photos, be sure to rename your photo files with an appropriate name that depicts your photo … e.g. IntoMist.jpg. You may also name your photo using the edit feature in My Gallery. Please note: This does not change the file name, only the display name of your photo.
Upload your photos being sure that the file size is no larger than 10MB. Upload only JPG format photos.
Create an order and pay for your entries following the instructions on the screen. You will need to select a group and category for each uploaded image.
You may enter as many photos as you like in each category, but each photo may be entered in only ONE category.
Pay for uploaded photos. Photos not paid for at the time of judging will be disqualified.

Entry Fees After awarding competition prizes, entry fees are used to support the Augusta Photo Festival classes and workshops. Discounts cannot be combined between groups.
Youth Group. First six images, $2.00 per photo; seven or more images, $1.50 per photo
Enthusiast Group. First eight images, $10.00 per photo; each image after 8, $8.00 per photo
Advanced Group. First eight images, $12.00 per photo; each image after 8, $10.00 per photo

All entries must be the contestant’s own work.
No photo entries may have won 1st, 2nd, 3rd, or Best of Show in previous APF Photo Competitions.
Either film or digital images are acceptable. Film images must be scanned into a digital format for the judge’s review.
All entries must be submitted online, do not mail any entries to the Augusta Photo Festival. See the “How to Enter” section above for details.
No photographs depicting commercial representation as their primary subject and/or reproduction of copyright material or trademarks will be accepted.
Any photographs depicting violence, nudity, profanity, and/or lewd gestures will be automatically disqualified from this competition.
Photographs can only be entered into one category.
Photos that violate or infringe upon another person's copyright are not eligible.
Watermarks and/or photographer’s logos are not permitted on photographs.
Cropped and/or rotated photos are eligible in all categories.
Minor adjustments, including levels, curves, contrast, saturation, sharpening, high dynamic range (HDR), focus stacking, etc. are acceptable for all categories.
Adding to or digitally altering the content of a photo is only allowed in the Fine Art category for the Advanced group.
Releases The entrant must obtain and have access to all necessary releases (model, property, and/or artist) and agrees to hold APF harmless against all claims and liabilities arising out of APF's display, publication and promotion, or other use of each image submitted to APF.
Judging Judging will be conducted by persons qualified in the field of photography, as chosen by the Augusta Photo Festival Competition Committee.
Entries will be judged on technical techniques that include exposure, focus, sharpness and depth of field, color and tone, contrast, and lighting.
Entries will be judged on content that includes artistic and journalistic styles.
Entries will be judged on visual and aesthetic criteria that includes framing and viewpoint, foreground and background, design elements and principle, photographic arrangement, and visual impact.
Entries will be judged on general characteristics that include originality, insight, context, and style.
The judges will select up to 10 finalists per category from all entries. Finalists will be notified of their selection no later than August 31, 2018.
Finalists Up to ten photographs from each category in each group will be selected for final judging.
Instructions on submitting the photographs will be provided to the finalists as part of the selection notification not later than August 31, 2018.
Finalists will be asked to submit their chosen images in a professionally framed and matted format to the APF Committee on the following dates: September 20-21.
Selected finalists from each category will be published on the APF web-site and placed on exhibit for the Competition finale.
Final entries are further judged to determine 1st, 2nd, and 3rd places for each group and category as well as “Best of Show.”
Everyone that partakes in the Augusta Photo Festival is encouraged to attend the closing ceremonies, especially finalists in the Photo Competition.
The announcement of all winners will be done at the closing ceremonies and will include the presentation of ribbons and prize awards.
The Augusta Photo Festival will have the nonexclusive, perpetual right to use your image in connection with the Photo Competition and promotion of the Competition, in any media now or hereafter known, including, but not limited to display at a potential exhibition of winners, publication of a book featuring select entries in the Competition, and publication on the Augusta Photo Festival website, highlighting entries or winners of the Competition.
Any photograph reproduced will include photo credit for the image maker.
The Augusta Photo Festival will not be required to pay any additional consideration or seek any additional approval in connection with such uses.
Judges may, at their discretion, reclassify entries to another category or disqualyify entries for rules violations.
The competition is void where prohibited or restricted by law.
The Augusta Photography Festival reserves the right to cancel the competition or modify these rules at its discretion.
All decisions of the Augusta Photo Festival organizers will be final.
